Frequently Asked Questions
Besides the music, what made the NACWM Unique from the GAR?
It was the membership. Although it was started by the GAR, they evolved over time to bring the Sons in as full members.
Why did the GAR neglet to include them as an Allied Order?
Its quite clear that the NACWM was definatley an ally and very important. Just never formally recognized. They likely didn't see the need to formalize it because the musicians were GAR members to begin with. The Sons that later became members also had their own Order.
Why were Allied Orders so important to the GAR?
After the Civil War there was a huge amount of work to be done to repair the country and the families that survived it. The Veterans could not do it alone. In fact, every Order had its own specialty and its own membership restraints as a challenge. The GAR knew that these important organizations should be recognized for their charitable works. This also extended comaraderi beyond the individual groups because of the mission they shared
Did the GAR and the NACWM meet together?
Yes and no. They did not discuss the business of music in the same room as the GAR but they would hold meetings at the same encampments!
The GAR is defunct. How is it even possible to add another Allied Order?
We are not asking the GAR to create or adopt an Allied Order. We are asking the SUVCW in 2023. The GAR has set a precedent of creating and adopting Allied Orders. When the SUVCW became the legal heirs of the GAR, they adopted all the priciples of Fraternity, Charity, Loyalty, the mission, and the traditions. The SUVCW can absolutely adopt an Allied Order of their own! Especially for an Organization that directly served the GAR and consisted of membership from the War Veterans and SUVCW together, side by side!.
I see the "new" NACWM is in early stages of development. Why do you want the SUVCW to adopt it so soon?
So they can sculpt it in their image. The SUVCW should be on the ground floor. The NACWM is advocating for the advantage of both the Musicians and the SUVCW mutually. The musicians and SUVCW should want nothing different than a symbiotic relationship of respect and admiration.
When is the NACWM National Encampment?
2025-2026. It will likely be through Zoom by its membership. The business will be adopting bylaws. If you have an interest in sculpting the foundation of the NACWM, I recomend you reach out before then.
Will the NACWM have State and local "chapters" such as camps (in the SUVCW) ?
Perhaps. But it's going to start as a National Effort. It's too early to tell.
Will the NACWM have their own medal/badge to signify membership ?
Absolutely. we will likely model it after the ones from the Heyday of the NACWM. As for now, that is putting the cart before the horse. Today, we are only interested in the merits of the NACWM and its ability to be rekindled.
The SUVCW has membership requirements that restrict women. Is that consistant with the Allied Orders?
Yes, a few Allied Orders INCLUDE women, not exclude them.
The SUVCW has membership requirements that restrict non-lineal membership. Is that consistant with the Allied Orders?
Yes, The Womens Relief Corps is NOT lineage-based. They are an Allied Order..
Who exactly is eligible to join the NACWM ?
Quite simply, lineal & non-lineal Union Civil War musicians. Whether or not they are a man or woman. Membership oppertunities will also include band managers and color guard.
Is the NACWM a non profit?
As of October 2023, we are not. In time to come, our goal is to seek non-profit status under Title 36 and become Congressionally Chartered as a Patriotic & Historical Organization.
How does the NACWM intend to uniquely preserve history?
By keeping the memory of the NACWM and the GAR through performance and public eduction. Also, collecting, archiving, and distribute freely, Civil War era music and the robust publications of GAR music.
How does the NACWM intend to serve musicians?
By fostering good will across all Union Civil War players and bands, so we may support each other and prosper together. We aim to create a network of musicians and bands that will support them in any unique way they require - no matter what it may require. Additionally its important to develope standardized scores of commonly played music in order to have cohesion for cross-order ensembles. The NACWM is committed to seeking Allied Order status from the SUVCW. Recognition of Civil War Musicians is an important step in growing a mutually beneficial relationship.
How does the NACWM intend to serve the SUVCW?
By creating an extended family of brothers and sisters to support our common goals. By providing a one-stop source of in-house musicians to provide taps and music for all levels of the organization - from Camp to National - for ceremonies, parades, balls, concerts, fundraisers, monument dedications, and encampments. Educating our musicians about the GAR and SUVCW will foster a deeper understanding as to why we support each other and keep the memory of the boys in blue alive.
